Romain Vincelot, a former player under Gus Poyet at Brighton, has tipped the new coach to succeed at Sunderland.
The Uruguayan has been handed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light and faces a real task in trying to drag the Black Cats away from the foot of the table.
Although Vincelot never quite proved himself to Poyet with the Seagulls after signing from Dagenham & Redbridge, the French midfielder has nothing but praise for his former boss and believes he will turn around Sunderland's fortunes.
Vincelot told Press Association Sport: "He's in the kind of situation he was in when he arrived at Brighton, so I think he has the ability to do it.
"Then it is the Premier League, so it is a big challenge for him, but I think he has everything to do it properly.
"He's a really good manager and a good tactician, really unbelievable. He gave me good advice and lots of good habits on the pitch."
