O'Neill targets Everton

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has revealed his plan to make the north-east side as good as Everton over the next few years.

The Black Cats have made a stuttering start to the Premier League campaign and currently sit just two places above the relegation zone with only five points between themselves and bottom side Southampton.

The Northern Irishman took over from Steve Bruce last year and helped the side to finish 13th, but he has not been able to repeat results this time round.

The former Aston Villa boss recognises and respects the job done by David Moyes at Goodison Park, where his side will travel on Saturday and hopes that he can achieve a similar feat over the next couple of seasons.

"I think Everton have got a good team and good bench and this could be their season," he said.

"Nothing has surprised me about Everton. They are very strong. They can compete physically and they can go long when they have to."
