Former Sunderland forward Martin Smith believes the return of striker Steven Fletcher from injury is like a new signing for the club.
The Black Cats were one of the bigger movers in the transfer market this summer, with no less than 13 new faces coming through the doors at the Stadium of Light.
However, Sunderland had been missing their star striker Fletcher who made his return to action from an ankle injury in the club's 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in their last outing.
The Scotland striker made a scoring return in the defeat in the capital and Smith, who enjoyed seven years with Sunderland, believes Fletcher is going to be a key player for the club once again this season.
Smith told the club's official website: "He's like a new signing, definitely.
"You know what you're going to get from Fletcher; he showed that last season. When he's fit and playing, he will score goals.
"Thankfully it's not taken him long to get off the mark. He had one chance and scored and that's the mark of a good striker, especially when he's been out for so long."
