Sunderland's swoop to take Manchester City striker Benjani on loan until the summer has now been confirmed by the Premier League.

The Blacks Cats failed to wrap up a deal before Monday's 5pm deadline but boss Steve Bruce was convinced that all the required paperwork was submitted in time and he was confident of landing his man.

The Premier League acknowledged that a communications issue out of Sunderland's hands was to blame for the delay and have now given the Zimbabwe international permission to move to the Stadium of Light.

Bruce told the club's website: "He's a big, strong, powerful centre forward and one we've been tracking for a long time.

"I'm delighted that we've been able to bring him to the club, he'll add another dimension to our striking options and will be a great addition to the squad."
