Bundesliga side Augsburg want to turn Ji Dong-won's loan deal into a permanent transfer but will have to pay around £2.5m to land him.
The South Korean striker has been on loan at the German club since January and his time there has been a success with five goals to his name in 17 appearances.
Sunderland paid £2m for the player in 2011 when they signed him from Chunnam Dragons and they will want a return on their investment.
However, Augsburg may struggle to pay that much, although having avoided relegation on the last day of the season, they could feel it is worth pushing the boat out to land the 21-year-old.
