Sunderland's Republic of Ireland striker Anthony Stokes is understood to be close to a season-long loan switch to Hibs.

The 20-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at the Stadium of Light since joining for £2million from Arsenal in 2007 and following a Black Cats cash injection, could be deemed surplus to requirements.

Stokes was farmed out on loan to Crystal Palace last season, but he has also spent a spell north of the border in recent seasons.

The Republic of Ireland international was a Falkirk loanee during the 2006-07 season, when he worked under Hibs boss John Hughes.

Stokes enjoyed his most prolific spell with the Bairns, scoring 14 goals in 16 games.
