Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher has had surgery on the ankle problem that has ended his season prematurely.
The 26-year-old damaged ankle ligaments whilst playing for Scotland last month and, after scans, it was revealed that he would miss the rest of the campaign.
It is hoped that the £12m summer signing from Wolves will be ready to take his place in the squad at the start of pre-season training in June, although the club themselves have yet to put a time limit on his return.
The striker remains the club's leading scorer this season despite missing the last few matches and not having turned out for new boss Paolo Di Canio.
