Britain started their Fed Cup promotion bid with a comfortable 3-0 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Portugal.

British number one Elena Baltacha followed up Katie O'Brien's easy 6-2 6-0 win over Ema Burgic with a 6-1 6-1 mauling of world number 387 Sandra Martinovic. Baltacha then joined Sarah Borwell to defeat the Bosnian doubles team 6-3 6-2 to complete the whitewash.

Baltacha, who reached the third round of the recent Australian Open where she lost to Dinara Safina, said: "I think the most important thing was that I got a win.

"I think I played really well in patches and in patches not great, I don't think I've actually hit a forehand into the side fence before!"

O'Brien added: "I think it was all about me being solid and making her move and that's what I did really. I served quite well as well which I was pleased with."

Britain will now face Austria and Belarus as they look to finish top of Group D and reach the play-of on Saturday. April's World Group II play-offs await the two winning teams.
