Davenport forced out of Olympic singles

TennisFormer Olympic tennis champion Lindsay Davenport has been forced to pull out of the Beijing singles tournament through injury.

The 32-year-old becomes the latest big-name to withdraw from Beijing after struggling to shake off a knee injury that has hampered her this summer

Davenport, who won gold in 1996, is expected to stay in Beijing for the doubles event.

"There's concern about being able to play, potentially, 11 matches," said a US team spokesman.

The American star follows Croatian duo Ivo Karlovic and Mario Ancic's withdrawals due to illness earlier this week while Maria Sharapova, Mary Pierce and Amelie Mauresmo all also decided against playing in Beijing.

A decision on her replacement in the main part of the draw will be made on Saturday.
