Fed relieved to keep up record

TennisRoger Federer was a relived man after beating Gilles Muller to take his place in the US Open semi-finals.

The world number two has yet to win a Grand Slam this year but kept his hopes alive with a 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 7-6 (7/5) victory over the Luxemburg qualifier.

The Swiss ace was expected to move through to the last four with ease but was pushed all the way by the man who beat fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko in the previous round.

Despite a dip in form this season, Federer is still many pundits' tip to win a fifth consecutive title at Flushing Meadows and extended his record of reaching 'Slam semi-finals to 18.

He now meets third seed Novak Djokovic in New York and hopes to add another major title to his illustrious list of achievements.

"I'm happy I won first of all," Federer said. "After the tough match I had last time, it's nice to get through in straight sets.

"This was a tough opponent who has been playing very well in this tournament and showed why he was so dangerous today.

"I'm happy to keep the semi-final streak alive. That's a huge streak for such a long time. I have played well in this tournament, so I'm really happy to keep it alive and give myself an opportunity to be in the final four.

"I hope this time around, I can take it a step further than I did in Paris or Wimbledon."
