Great Britain have beaten Belarus 2-1 in their final Fed Cup Europe/Africa Group 1 match with Anne Keothavong back to winning ways.
The former British number one lost her comeback match in the vital tie with Austria on Thursday but she bounced back with a straight sets victory over Ekaterina Dzehalevich in Lisbon.
The GB team had little or no chance of progressing to the play-offs but the 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 will have done Keothavong's confidence the world of good after she spent six months out of the sport following knee surgery in August 2009.
Katie O'Brien could not match Keothavong's feat and went down 6-3 6-3 to world number 55 Olga Govortsova in the second singles match.
And it looked as though the Brits were set for back-to-back defeats as Elena Baltacha and Sarah Borwell were a set and 3-0 down in the deciding doubles, before they rallied to save two match points and pull off a 3-6 7-5 6-2 victory over Govortseva and Tatiana Poutchek in the Portuguese capital.
Austria go through from Group D to the weekend's play-offs, with two places in World Group II up for grabs.
