Keothavong battles past King

Anne Keothavong has made it through to the second round for only the second time after a battling 4-6 6-2 6-3 win over Vania King.

The British number one had become the first woman from these shores to qualify for the main draw automatically since 1999 as she has a world ranking of 92, but took a while to get going against her American opponent.

The 24-year-old made too many unforced errors in the opening set which enabled King, one place below Keathavong in the rankings, to take the early initiative.

However, the powerful Londoner stepped up her game in the second set and fired off 18 winners to level the match.

Keothavong's big hitting from the back of the court began to force more mistakes from King, who had also only once at SW19 before, and she took the decider to progress.
