Vesnina withdraws from ASB Classic

Fifth seed Elena Vesnina has had to withdraw from the ASB Classic tennis tournament due to injury.

The Russian has picked up an ankle problem and had to withdraw from what would have been her sixth straight appearance in the event. Vesnina's best result in the tournament was back in 2009 when she reached the final, before eventually losing to Elena Dementieva. Tournament director Karl Budge was informed by her agent of the injury, and he now has to pick another wildcard entry. Vesnina's withdrawal allows German Julia Goerges to move into the main draw.

The tournament begins on December 30, and several big names will feature as preparation for the Australian Open which gets underway in January.

Roberta Vinci will be the top seed, while former Grand Slam winners Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic will also be looking to win.
