Ian Atkins has been placed in charge of Torquay for the rest of the season after the club parted company with John Cornforth.
Cornforth took charge of first-team affairs following the departure of Leroy Rosenior and was soon joined by Atkins who was appointed in an advisory role.
United have failed to pull clear of the relegation zone and chairman Mike Bateson has made the change in the hope results will improve over the last six games of the season.
"After discussions with my co-directors it has been unanimously decided that John Cornforth will stand down and Ian Atkins will take over as manager until the end of the season," Bateson said in a statement to the club's official website.
"Clearly my idea of a manager and advisor has not worked and having come so close to the point of no-return we have this one final roll of the dice left open to us.
"I would like to thank John Cornforth for his efforts and this change is no reflection on his capabilities and I trust that he will apply for the vacant management post at the end of the season."
