Torquay have appointed former captain Chris Hargreaves as their new manager.

The 41-year-old, previously first-team coach at Championship side Bournemouth, replaces Alan Knill whose contract was terminated by the Gulls last week with the club 91st in the Football League.

And Hargreaves, beginning his first managerial job, brings former Torquay team-mate Lee Hodges, who has had a spell as Truro boss, to Plainmoor as his assistant.

"Chris has started work already and we are thrilled to have a new manager in place for the challenges ahead over the second half of the season," United chairwoman Thea Bristow told the club's official website.

"We have been inundated with applications from across the football world, and thank you to all those interested in the position, but once the decision was made for a change of direction, Chris was always our first choice.

"He was very impressive in the interview and I am delighted to have both Chris and Lee Hodges back at Plainmoor.

"We now have a vibrant and ambitious management team to take us forward to the next stage in our development as a club, and we are all excited for the future."

Hargreaves was also given permission to speak to Northampton about their vacant managerial position but chose to stay in Devon, where he currently lives with his family.

During his playing days Hargreaves captained Torquay between 2007 and 2010, a spell which saw the Gulls promoted back to the Football League.

And his battle to keep them there begins with a trip to face AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
