Hargreaves tries to lift Gulls

Torquay boss Chris Hargreaves admits it is time to try and pick up his players off the floor after a 3-0 thumping at Hartlepool.

While his Gulls played some nice football, they lacked any punch up front and were well beaten, remaining bottom of the Football League.

Goals from Jack Barmby, Luke James and Marlon Harewood earned Pools a comfortable win, but left Hargreaves admitting he has one hell of a job on his hands to keep the Gulls in the Football League.

"There's no throwing tea cups around, the lads are low already - the time for throwing tea cups is long gone," admitted Hargreaves after a fifth game without a win.

"After conceding the first we had shots and created good chances, more from distance, but did enough to be at least level after 60 minutes.

"Conceding the second is a confidence killer and I've got to pick the boys up, do some work, pick 11 players to win next week."

The Gulls best chance came on the stroke of half time, but Elliott Benyon was denied by a strong Scott Flinders save.

And it was game over as soon as James headed in the second in the 55th minute.

"It's very disappointing, I thought we did well first half, passed the ball well and were the better passing team," added Hargreaves.

"We created three really good chances, but we have to score - simple story, you have to score when you are on top.

"We conceded the first against the run of play and at half time I said they had done well - and then we go and concede from a corner, a basic in football and from then we are chasing it.

"We conceded a third when we were caught out going for a goal ourselves - I think the second goal and the manner we conceded it is more annoying than the third."
