Tottenham's France midfielder Etienne Capoue has revealed he turned down a move to Cardiff because he thought they were not a step up.
The former Toulouse player was the subject of a transfer tug of war between Cardiff and Spurs over the summer but ended up going to White Hart Lane and he has now revealed the reasons behind his decision.
The midfielder claims a move to the newly-promoted Bluebirds would not have been a step up in his career so he decided to join Andre Villas-Boas' side instead - even after agreeing personal terms in South Wales.
"Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not," he told Mercato 365.
"I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league.
"Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse."
