Defender Younes Kaboul has been told he must prove his fitness at the club before he is offered a new deal.
The 27-year-old has been plagued by injuries during the last few seasons although he still remains highly rated at the club.
However, his present deal runs out next summer and he is now under pressure to earn an extension, given his recent problems.
Spurs have Jan Vertonghen, Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches as their other centre-back options with Kaboul featuring mainly in the Europa League this term, although Andre Villas-Boas would like to keep him if he can prove his fitness.
