Holtby lifts lid on Townsend treatment

Lewis Holtby has revealed that the Tottenham players are ensuring that Andros Townsend does not get carried away by his star status.

The 23-year-old Germany international midfielder has spoken out on how the squad at White Hart Lane have reacted to 22-year-old Townsend's recent exploits in which he has enjoyed an excellent start to the season for Andre Villas-Boas' side.

In addition to that he became an instant hit with England as his recent performances against Montenegro and Poland respectively helped Roy Hodgson's side pick up the six points required to book a place in next summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.

Therefore Holtby claims the Spurs players are doing their best to make sure Townsend remains grounded and to also be aware that there could be more trickier times in store for him in the future.

"Andros is a national hero and we are all very pleased for him," Holtby said.

"He has been playing some great football, but he is a young guy and we have been telling him there could be some rocky paths ahead.

"Being a footballer is a long journey and you have to be ready for the bumpy parts. That is what we have been trying to tell him."
