Rangers thwarted in late Townsend bid

QPR failed with a late bid to sign Spurs winger Andros Townsend on transfer deadline day.

R's boss Harry Redknapp brought in Brazilian midfielder Sandro from Tottenham on a busy day on Monday and wanted to land England international Townsend as well.

However, Spurs informed Rangers that the 23-year-old, who was also linked with Southampton, was not for sale and rejected an offer during the final hours of the transfer window.

Redknapp was also linked with another Spurs wideman, Aaron Lennon, but chose not to pursue that deal even though he may have been available.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino strengthened his options with the signing of French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier, while Lewis Holtby joined Sandro in going through the exit door as he completed a move to Hamburg on a season-long loan deal.
