Spurs close in on defender

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is closing in on target Miguel Lopes as the defender is set to sign a loan deal at the club.

The Spurs boss has plenty of work to do if he is to get his squad up to where he wants it to be by the time the season kicks off in three weeks and it looks as though Lopes will be on board by then.

The Sporting Lisbon right-back will join initially on loan but with a view to a permanent transfer in a year.

The defender will rival Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton, although he has been linked with a move to Swansea, for the regular spot in the side after Walker was plagued by injury problems towards the end of last season and missed the World Cup as a result.

Lopes, who can also operate on the left, has four caps for Portugal, and has previously played for Porto and Rio Ave and he spent last season on loan at Lyon.
