Spurs facing defensive crisis

Last Updated: Tue, 18 Mar 2014 14:15

Tottenham could play without a recognised centre-back against Benfica on Thursday as Younes Kaboul is struggling with a knock.

French defender Kaboul has been plagued with injuries all season and his latest unspecified problem occurred during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby.

The 28-year-old is now a doubt for the Europa League clash in Lisbon, leaving manager Tim Sherwood short of options at the back.

Tottenham will definitely be without Jan Vertonghen, who is suspended, while it is highly unlikely Michael Dawson or Vlad Chiriches will have recovered from their respective injuries in time to play.

Should none of his recognised centre-backs be available then Sherwood may be forced to deploy Etienne Capoue and Sandro in the heart of defence.

Sherwood is also waiting to see whether Emmanuel Adebayor will be fit to face Benfica after taking a knock against Arsenal.

The Togo international has been playing with minor issues in recent weeks and, given Spurs are 3-1 down from the first leg, Sherwood might decide against risking him in Portugal.
