Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe admits he started his pre-season early to try and fight for a place at next summer's World Cup.
Defoe began his pre-season training a week earlier than the rest of his Spurs team mates by flying out to France to work with fitness guru Tiberius Darau.
The 30-year-old has been capped 54 times for the national side, scoring 19 times since his making his debut against Sweden in 2004.
The former Portsmouth man is eager to catch the eye of Roy Hodgson ahead of selection for the World Cup in South America as it is more than likely to be his final chance.
Defoe said: "In my position there are some fantastic forwards for England but the shirt is there for the taking."
