Tranmere's 40-year-old defender Ian Goodison will be rested when they host Premier League side Stoke in the Capital One Cup at Prenton Park.
Boss Ronnie Moore has emphasised the importance of improving Rovers' fortunes in the league and therefore thinks Goodison is best kept in reserve ahead of the visit of Port Vale on Saturday.
Moore will also be without the equally experienced Jason Koumas, the midfielder still struggling with a groin problem, Andy Robinson (groin), Jake Kirby (ankle) and James Wallace (knee).
The latter has been out of action since December 1 and suffered another setback which means the Rovers captain is unlikely to be back in training for another couple of weeks.
