Walsall chairman Jeff Bonser has hit back and revealed the club had no option but to let Matt Fryatt and Jorge Leitao go.

Bonser is coming in for plenty of stick from the fans following the club's relegation to League Two and the departure of the star duo has upset them most.

Bonser has come out and defended the decision though and says the club had no option but to let them go.

"Let me set the record straight. Matty Fryatt wanted to leave. He was determined to play at a higher level and as such, it would have been unfair to the player and unproductive to the club to attempt to stand in his way.

"There has also been many inaccurate comments made regarding Jorge Leitao being prepared to stay until the end of the season.

"This is not correct. Jorge Leitao made it quite clear that he wanted to leave at the earliest opportunity, he was unhappy in England, and that he had the opportunity to join a Portuguese club near his home."
