Walsall boss Dean Smith was delighted to see his side avenge an opening-day defeat against Doncaster as they secured a 2-1 victory.

Fabien Brandy grabbed the winner after Billy Paynter had cancelled out Andy Butler's opener.

"We knew it would be a tough game because they are a good side," said Smith.

"We knew they were dangerous at set pieces and we worked on that in training and I thought we handled them well.

"Even though the pitch wasn't the greatest we got off to a great start and we played some good football in the first 15 minutes or so but then their physicality took over for the rest of the half.

"But I told the players at half-time that they are good footballers and to believe in themselves in the second half and we went on to win the game with a great finish."
