Roy Hodgson feels Wigan's fear of losing in their battle to avoid relegation could play into West Brom's hands on Saturday.
The Baggies boss takes Albion to the DW Stadium to face Roberto Martinez's men who currently sit at the foot of the Premier League table and are two points from safety as five clubs are embroiled in the scrap to stay up this season.
And, having experienced relegation battles during his spell at Fulham and then with Albion when he replaced Roberto Di Matteo just over a year ago, Hodgson is well aware of the pressure that the Latics find themselves under.
As a result, he wants his West Brom players to try and take advantage of Wigan's fear of losing and take three points this weekend.
"No-one plays well through fear," said Hodgson on the club's website.
"It is not a good motivating factor at all. It is a very dangerous motivating factor.
"Football is a game of emotions and needs to be played with the heart but equally it is a game which needs a cool head because we make a lot of decisions.
"You don't make good decisions when you are panicking, frightened, fearful, you make good decisions when you feel you are on top of your game and you know what you are doing."
