Baggies check on League One defender

West Bromwich Albion are showing interest in Oldham Athletic central defender James Tarkowski and had him watched on Tuesday night.

A Baggies scout attended Oldham's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section match against Notts County in which Tarkowski, 20, scored and generally impressed as his team won 5-1.

The Manchester-born centre back rose to prominence last season with a standout display against Everton in the FA Cup and has also attracted the attention of Manchester United and Stoke City.

Old Trafford boss David Moyes even made a personal check on the Oldham star earlier this season against Preston when he also found the back of the net - and handled the physical threat of PNE striker Kevin Davies.

Albion could also be watching teenage Oldham striker Jordan Bove, who came on as an 85th-minute substitute to make his debut for the club but was sent off less than four minutes later.
