West Brom are on the verge of completing a £1.8million deal to sign Rosenborg's Costa Rica international Cristian Gamboa.

The 24-year-old impressed at the World Cup with Costa Rica, featuring in all fives games his nation played in Brazil, and Baggies boss Alan Irvine has moved quickly to take him to the Hawthorns this week.

Gamboa has been linked with several other clubs, including Premier League rivals Hull City, but it now looks like West Brom have finally agreed a fee with the player's current Norwegian outfit.

His arrival will generate strong competition for the right-back berth in the new season given that Liverpool's England Under-21 international Andre Wisdom has already joined the club on a 12-month loan deal.

Irvine has also brought in Joleon Lescott, Chris Baird, Craig Gardner and club record-signing Brown Ideye since taking over from Pepe Mel in the hotseat.
