West Brom have joined Newcastle in the race to sign former Bolton Wanderers loan star Rodrigo Moreno from Benfica.

The Baggies have been alerted to the opportunity to bring the 21-year-old Spaniard back to the Premier League this summer, but will face serious competition for his signature from the Magpies.

Revered Newcastle scout Graham Carr is understood to have been following the striker closely in recent weeks and West Brom also sent a representative to watch Benfica's Portuguese league clash with Beira-Mar last Sunday.

Rodrigo, who was once on the books of Real Madrid, is under contract at Benfica until 2015 and is understood to earn less than £16,000-a-week.

He had a loan spell at Bolton two seasons ago when he scored once in four starts and 13 sub appearances, but impressed coaches at the club with his willingness to learn and adapt to the English game.

Rodrigo did not play against Beira-Mar, where there were also scouts from QPR, Reading, Brighton and Atletico Madrid, but did start in the Europa League against Bordeaux last night.

He has been in and out of the Benfica side this season and may be ready to move elsewhere to further his career.
