West Brom look set to miss out on the signing of Salomon Kalou with West Ham now strong favourites to land the Ivorian forward.
Albion and West Ham have triggered his £2.6m release clause and Hawthorns officials have put their best offer of a £40,000-a-week deal on the table for the Lille striker.
That offer would make Kalou one of the highest-paid players at The Hawthorns on an annual wage of more than £2m, but the ex-Chelsea star is said to favour a return to London.
West Ham have also been given permission to speak to the 27-year-old frontman who is also being chased by Trabzonspor and Valencia.
The Hammers are the bookmaker's favourites to wrap up a deal, but L'Equipe claim the player is in no hurry to leave France.
Albion insist the ball is now in Kalou's court, although they could still return to the negotiating table if the player expresses a desire to move to The Hawthorns, where he would link up with former Stamford Bridge team-mate Nicolas Anelka.
