West Brom scouted Watford's Championship match at Huddersfield on Saturday as George Thorne prepares to go to Vicarage Road on loan.
Scouts from five Premier League clubs were at the John Smith's Stadium for the match, which the Hornets won 2-1, with midfielder Josh McEachran and striker Fernando Forestieri said to be their standout performers.
West Brom's spy was joined by scouts from Hull City, Cardiff, Swansea and Norwich City, plus an elite performance scout from the FA - with McEachran the main attraction.
The 20-year-old midfielder is on loan from Chelsea until January but Watford hope to keep him until the end of the season.
West Brom could be keeping a watching brief in case Chelsea decide he is ready for a Premier League loan spell next year, but may not be ready to compete for a place at Stamford Bridge.
The Baggies took Matej Vydra on loan from Udinese this summer after he did well for Watford and if the Hornets fail to earn promotion again there could be other candidates to follow in the Czech striker's footsteps, including Forestieri.
The 23-year-old Argentina-born forward scored eight Championship goals for Watford last season and has struck twice so far in this campaign.
Meanwhile, Albion midfielder Thorne is set to join Watford on loan later this week to continue his recovery from serious injury.
The 20-year-old is fit again after eight months away from first-team football to recover from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
