Alan Irvine is set to become the new manager of West Brom after a compensation fee was thrashed out with Preston on Sunday.

The former Everton player and assistant boss will become the next manager at the Hawthorns if a £1million compensation figure can be agreed and reports suggest that was achieved on Sunday evening.

Since the depature of Tony Mowbray to Celtic, the highly-rated Scot has been heavily linked with the vacant post at West Brom despite Preston chairman Derek Shaw giving the club a hands-off-warning.

This has failed to deter the Baggies and the deal for the 50-year-old looks set to go through within the next week.

Cardiff city manager Dave Jones has also been one of the frontrunners for the job but this has been dismissed by Jones himself who says he is very happy at Cardiff and is not looking to move.
