Baggies working closely with Reid

West Bromwich Albion are continuing to manage defender Steven Reid's training programme as he hopes to feature this weekend.

With Billy Jones on the sidelines, Reid may come into contention for the Baggies' Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday as the club's coaches and medical staff closely monitor his fitness.

The 32-year-old has played just once this season - against Arsenal in the Capital One Cup - and he has often been overlooked, frequently failing to make Steve Clarke's 18-man matchday squad.

But assistant Keith Downing praised the experienced defender for his professionalism as he bides his time in the background.

"Reidy's being managed sensibly," said Downing. "He doesn't figure in every training session but has kept himself going. Every day he's in working at his game and, if he's not out there, he's in the gym. He's just a great pro."

Downing added: "Reidy's a good leader around the group. He's a sensible man but he also realises sometimes he can't get in the squad.

"The squad has improved but he's never been negative about anything. If it was down to Steven he'd be out there every day."

On Reid's individual training schedule, which is tailored so he does not suffer many setbacks, Downing added: "I think it's down to medical people trying to manage it the best way for him, so he doesn't have that element of risk.

"He trains three to four days a week - it's not like we roll him out just for the games."
