West Brom boss Steve Clarke watched Vitesse Arnhem's on-loan Chelsea right-back Thomas Kalas on Sunday as he plots a loan move.
The Baggies boss travelled to Holland with the club's European scout Tony Spearing to make a personal check on the highly-rated teenager who has progressed so quickly at Vitesse that Chelsea want him on loan at a Premier League club next term.
Clarke's relationships with those on the football side at Stamford Bridge put Albion in pole position to borrow Kalas for a season-long loan, particularly after impressing the Blues with his handling of Romelu Lukaku.
Kalas, 19, only played 45 minutes of the match on Sunday against Twente before limping off with a knock but has been involved in all 26 of his side's league games this season as they maintain their title tilt.
West Brom are on the look-out for a right-back as it is a current weakness in the squad with converted midfielder Steven Reid often prone to injury and Billy Jones yet to prove that he is consistent enough at the top level.
