West Brom have been told they must pay £2.6m for Lille forward Salomon Kalou, but his wages are high and West Ham are interested.
The former Chelsea winger, 27, is a player who head coach Steve Clarke knows well and is keen to be re-united with next season.
Kalou is keen to return to the Premier League, although his £70,000-a-week demands would comfortably make him the highest-paid player in the club's history if a deal goes through.
Lille are not interested in a loan agreement and the Baggies will have to trigger the £2.6m buy-out clause if they are to begin negotiations with the Ivory Coast international.
Kalou was given a huge signing-on fee when he joined last season and the French club want to re-coup their money if they are to allow the striker to leave, even on a temporary basis.
West Ham are also understood to be in the race to snap up the player and would appear to have the budget to handle his wages and the fee.
