Pepe Mel insists he can emulate his victory over Jose Mourinho when in charge of Real Betis as he prepares West Brom to face Chelsea.

The Baggies boss led old club Betis to a 1-0 victory over Mourinho's Real Madrid in November 2012 when they both managed in Spain and he will hope for another success against the Portuguese coach at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

Despite Chelsea being big favourites to win as they aim to stay top of the Premier League table, Mel says his side can secure a shock win.

"It's possible for us to win," Mel maintained. "The last season Mourinho was manager of Real Madrid and Pepe Mel was manager of Betis. Mel win.

"Was it the best win of my career? No, it was [only] a La Liga match. It was a more important match for Jose than for me because when they lost this match Real Madrid lost La Liga.

"That's the same here. For now Chelsea are top of the Premier League and it's a difficult match for West Brom."

Following the setback of a defeat at Crystal Palace last time out, Albion need the points to help them in their relegation fight and Mel says they will approach the game in the same way they did when taking a point off in-form Liverpool earlier in the month.

"This is the way for West Brom. It's possible for us to win 13 matches. Chelsea are top of the league, but for us it's the same match as Liverpool," he added.

"They won 4-0 against Everton and they beat Arsenal 5-1 at the weekend but we drew 1-1 with them. This is the way forward for us. It's possible for us to win but it's very important that the players think it's possible to win also."
