West Brom head coach Roy Hodgson have revealed that contract talks have started with Steven Reid to extend his stay at the Hawthorns.

Reid, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury, will become a free agent in the summer as his existing deal is set to expire but the Albion are looking to take up an option to keep him for another 12 months.

Hodgson has no concerns about his fitness problems and fully expects the negotiations with the former Republic of Ireland international to be concluded fairly quickly.

At this stage, the club's technical and sporting director Daniel Ashworth has opened discussions with Reid's representatives, although no official dialogue has taken place between the Baggies and the player himself.

Hodgson said: "Dan is having discussions with Reid's agent. Steven has done a very good job in the time I've been here so I don't think his current injury will affect him.

"It will be more a question of us being convinced he's a man that will still help us next year and he being convinced that he wants to be here and help us out.

"Dan will talk him through that one and, if he wants to stay, it won't be a difficult decision to keep him if they can reach an agreement."
