Birmingham City's England Under-20 winger Nathan Redmond is being linked with a move to West Ham in the summer.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce will be looking to add to his squad at the end of the season and co-owner David Sullivan revealed on Tuesday that money would be made available for strengthening in the summer and that they would be looking for around five new faces.
Norwich boss Chris Hughton has made Redmond one of his top targets this summer but all those plans could be put in jeopardy if the Canaries suffer relegation to the Championship.
West Ham are safe and know they can take advantage of any uncertainty from City by making their move quickly - with Birmingham ready to do business as soon as their valuation is met.
Birmingham have slapped a £10m price tag on Redmond, who is under contract at St Andrew's for another year, but they may have to accept slightly less and a graduated series of payments.
