West Ham United are understood to made an approach for Lorient defender Lamine Kone as they look to strengthen.

Kone has impressed during his last four seasons in Ligue 1 with Lorient, attracting interest from a number of clubs around Europe.

However, the east London club are the first to make an official approach for his services but will face competition from Hull and Sunderland.

The trio were all linked with the 25-year-old in January but failed to make an offer as he continued to enjoy his football in his homeland.

The defender signed a fresh deal with the French outfit last summer and is under contract until 2016.
