Hammers to spend again

West HamWest Ham boss Alan Curbishley is planning to make at least one more signing this summer after landing keeper Jan Lastuvka on loan.

It has been quiet on the transfer front for the Hammers over the close season with only one major signing so far - the £5million capture of Swiss international Valon Behrami from Lazio.

West Ham finished a credible tenth last season in Curbishley's first full season as manager, but their season was heavily disrupted by injuries and Curbishley is eager to avoid a repeat.

He said: "We've got little niggles and as we get closer to the start of the season and the window closing, I think you'll see a lot of clubs reacting to different issues.

"We'll be no different to that."

West Ham already have concerns ahead of the new season with injury worries affecting Dean Ashton, Carlton Cole, Craig Bellamy, George McCartney, Kieron Dyer, James Collins, Danny Gabbidon, Jon Spector, James Tomkins and Luis Boa Morte.

The list of players injured almost reads like a team sheet for West Ham and Curbishley is well aware that he has to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.

He said: "There's one or two other areas that I've got to start considering - we've got about a month until the window closes. It's because of injuries."

Former Fulham keeper Lastuvka has arrived from Shaktar Donetsk with a view to a permanent £2.5m deal in 12 months' time.
