Hammers Swiss back-up plan

West HamWest Ham are tipped to choose between Swiss ace Bruno Berner or trialist Ben Thatcher as they seek left-back cover this month.

Former Blackburn man Berner is a free agent having been released by the Hammers' Premier League rivals at the end of last season and would provide experience cover for the injured George McCartney.

Three Football League clubs, Nottingham Forest, Norwich City and Leicester City, have all expressed an interest in signing the 30-year-old but the chance of Premier League football should put the Hammers in pole position.

Berner, who has 16 full caps for Switzerland, is not the only option though for Alan Curbishley, who has also been running the rule over former Tottenham defender Thatcher.

The 32-year-old Wales international is also available for free having been released by Charlton at the end of last season and played in West Ham reserves friendly earlier this week.
