Wigan skipper Gary Caldwell has singled out fellow Scot Shaun Maloney as the player to keep his club in the Premier League.

Maloney has been in outstanding form for the Latics over the last month after finally establishing himself in Roberto Martinez's starting eleven and Caldwell certainly thinks he has the talent to help them avoid from the drop.

The former Celtic winger has been dogged by injury problems since arriving at the DW Stadium last summer which has impacted upon his involvement with the first-team.

However, he is now enjoying a regular run in the side which perhaps unsurprisingly has coincided with Wigan's most productive points return of the season.

Caldwell told the Daily Record: "Shaun has been outstanding since he came to Wigan but for one reason or another hasn't managed to get a regular starting place.

"But he's been outstanding in training and has been fit which is key.

"The wee man trained every day so when he got his chance he was flying and ready to take it. That's been one of the big turning points in our season.

"Shaun's helped with performances and results - it's been like signing a new player.

"It's not just Shaun's form. He has spurred on Franco di Santo and Victor Moses because they both seem a lot livelier with him next to them.

"Hopefully he can give us that spark we'll need in a difficult run-in to help us stay in the Premiership."
