Wigan Athletic have taken Michael Ball on trial following his failure to secure a contract with Portsmouth or Notts County.

The 30-year-old was released in the summer by Manchester City after being deemed surplus to requirements and has since been on the look out for a new club.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has reportedly lined up a couple of behind closed doors games for this weekend where the former Everton, Rangers and PSV man will get his chance to shine.

Reports in the press suggest that if Ball does well Martinez could be tempted into selling Maynor Figueroa, with Sunderland set to make a large January offer for the Honduras international.
