Everton are being linked with a New Year move for Wigan's Paul Scharner who is out of contract in the summer.
The Austrian apparently has a release clause in his current contract which would allow him to go for £6m but with his contract up in seven months, cash-strapped Everton will not be offering that sort of money.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez has hinted that the midfielder, who can also play in defence, would be sold for a fee now rather than see him move next summer for nothing.
Fulham have long been touted for a swoop as well and it remains to be seen if the Cottagers will enter the race for the 29-year-old.
