Wigan have confirmed out-of-favour defender Erik Edman has left the club after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Reports on Friday revealed the Swedish full-back was set to rejoin Helsingborg in his home country after falling down the pecking order at the DW Stadium.

Latics have now confirmed his contract has been cancelled and he will head out of the club.

The 31-year-old, who signed from French side Rennes for £500,000 in January 2008, has started just two Premier League games this season - the last of which was when he was given the run around by Aaron Lennon in the 9-1 defeat at Spurs in November.
