Wigan will miss out on the signing of Espanyol midfielder Joan Verdu, who is set to pledge his future to the La Liga side.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez is constantly keeping an eye on the Spanish transfer market and is known to be interested in Verdu, who is set to fall out of contract in the summer.
Swansea are also keen on the 29-year-old, while Sevilla, Valencia, Malaga and Russian club Anzhi have been linked as the race hots up for the player's signature.
However, Verdu's agent Magico Diaz has been holding talks with Espanyol officials and has hinted his client will turn down all offers in favour of signing a new deal at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
