Wigan are sweating over the fitness of Shaun Maloney who has been forced to pull out of the Scotland squad through injury.

The forward picked up an abdominal problem during Saturday's 2-1 defeat against West Brom and will not figure when the Scots take on Luxembourg in a friendly on Wednesday night.

The injury is not thought to be serious but Latics boss Roberto Martinez does not want to take any risks with the player ahead of this weekend's crucial clash with Liverpool.

Maloney has to be rated as an early doubt for the trip to Anfield but Latics hope with rest the problem will sort itself out and he will be able to take his place in the side.
