James McArthur is taking longer than expected to recover from injury and Roberto Martinez is unable to set a date for his return.

The Wigan midfielder has been missing for the last three weeks after suffering a dead leg and boss Martinez says they thought he would have been back in the side before now.

Latics will have a better idea this week on when he will be able to return to the side but it does not look imminent and he will be missing again this weekend.

"It was a nasty injury that James suffered, and his recovery time is still ongoing," Martinez told the Evening Post. "He's not ready yet to rejoin the group, and we're going to continue to assess him this week to see how he develops."

Latics need the Scotland international back as soon as possible after Ben Watson was ruled out until the new year with a broken leg but Martinez will also be wary of rushing him back too soon.
