Midfielder staying at JJB

WiganWigan's Wilson Palacios has ended the speculation linking him with a move away from the JJB by penning a new three-year deal.

The 24-year-old had been linked with a move away from the Latics after impressing since his move from Birmingham in January.

The Honduran playmaker was instrumental in helping Wigan stay in the Premier League last season, and said: "Why would I want to leave?

"I've enjoyed every minute since linking up with manager Steve Bruce again and I love the Wigan fans."

Palacios and winger Antonio Valencia showed promise towards the end of last season and both had been linked with moves away.

Manager Steve Bruce is relieved to have tied Palacios down to a new deal and has challenged the skillful duo to continue their improvement over the next season.

He said: "I think most of the big clubs have looked at the two of them and thought, 'these are good players'

"A lot of clubs will be looking and thinking they had a good season with Wigan so we'll keep monitoring them and see if they can do it next year again - then I might have a problem."

Palacios is eager to continue his good form into the new season, and said: "I can't wait for the season to begin and the first minute of the first game at West Ham United followed by the big home game against Chelsea."
